Newcastle's Future is Electric: City Mandates EV Charging Ready Developments

Newcastle has introduced a new section in its Development Control Plan (DCP) that aims to prepare the city for the future of electric vehicles. Under this new section, all new developments and alteration and addition projects over $200,000 must be EV charging ready.

To comply with this requirement, all off-street car parking spaces in new residential and non-residential developments must have electric circuitry to accommodate "Level 2" or higher standard electric vehicle charging points. This will ensure that 100% of car spaces can install electric vehicle charging points in the future.

Developers must also provide adequate electrical capacity and infrastructure, such as cable size and distribution board size, to support the electric vehicle charging point system. The circuitry must be buried underground or provided via cable trays sufficient to accommodate electric circuitry to each car space.

Furthermore, the installation of electric circuitry for a "Level 2" or higher standard electric vehicle charging point is encouraged for new dwelling houses, semi-detached dwellings, or dual occupancies. A Development Application must be accompanied by a report prepared by a suitably qualified and experienced person, such as an electrical engineer. This report should demonstrate how the development will be EV ready and include an accurate electrical plan, specifications for any off-street car parking, and any electric kiosk requirements.

Our EV charging specialists offer services to help developers comply with this new regulation and ensure their development is ready for the future of electric vehicles.
